Chamber of commerce welcomes Gillibrand Senate appointment

PLATTSBURGH - The Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the Jan. 23 announcement by Gov. David A. Paterson that he is appointing Congresswoman Kirsten E. Gillibrand, D-Greenport, to the U.S. Senate seat vacated this week by fellow Democrat Hillary R. Clinton.
"Governor Paterson has shown excellent judgement and has done the North Country and all of upstate New York a great service," stated chamber president Garry F. Douglas, who was present for the announcement in Albany. "Kirsten Gillibrand will be a committed, accessible and responsive senator in the recent tradition of Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer. And there'll be no learning curve when it comes to our North Country needs and opportunities. She already knows them and is already an engaged partner with us on border issues, Plattsburgh International Airport, rural health care, broadband development, transportation funding and much more."
Douglas said he considers Gillibrand "a personal friend as well as a valued partner."

"It's been a pleasure to see how quickly she has developed as a serious and effective member of Congress, and how strongly she connected with the people in her district in just two years," he stated. "That ability to connect and respond is what she will now demonstrate statewide."

Douglas served as executive assistant for 14 years to one of her predecessors in her district, the late Congressman Gerald Solomon.
The Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber serves as an active advocate in Washington on behalf of North Country issues and projects. It is the largest business and economic development alliance in northern New York, representing more than 3,250 companies and organizations in Clinton, Essex, Franklin and northern Warren counties.
