WESTPORT - In a battle between two previously unbeaten teams, Westport claimed the top league record in MVAC boys basektball Jan. 16 with a 68-41 win over Johnsburg.
Junior forward Nathan Gay hit 11 of 13 free throws for the Eagles on his way to a game-high 27 points against the Division III leading Jaguars.
Center Nick McCarroll scored eight points for Johnsburg in the first quarter, which ended in a 12-12 tie. Westport allowed just one more basket from McCarroll for the remainder of the game, however, as they outscored Johnsburg 42-15 in the two middle quarters.
Up 53-27 after three, the Eagles would extend their lead to 30 before the Jaguars broke a six minute scoring drought. A 14-10 finish would not be enough for Johnsburg to challenge the Division II leaders.
"I think we came out in the second half and played much more intense, much more focused," said Westport head coach Brad Rascoe.
Bo McKinley was Westport's second leading scorer with 14 points to go along with 4 assists.
"The kids played very unselfish basketball," said Rascoe, pointing to excellent interior passing in the third period. "I always ask for a team commitment and a team effort, and I think I got that from them tonight."
Curtis Mead performed well down low for Westport with 5 points and 11 rebounds. Gay added 8 rebounds and Colin MacIver 7.
Adrian Veldman led the Jaguars with 14 points, including two 3-pointers. McCarroll finished with 10 points and Taylor Ordway added 9, all from behind the arc. With a roster of just seven players, however, Johnsburg had trouble matching the Eagles' depth.
"I think pushing the ball down the court got them a little tired," Rascoe said.
Altogether, the Eagles were 17 for 21 from the line. Johnsburg was two for five.
