Accident claims life of Champlain teen

MOOERS - A two-car motor vehicle accident has claimed the life of a town of Champlain youth.

New York State Police have reported Johnathan C. McGoldrick, 16, died as a result of injuries he sustained from an accident which occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. Jan. 19.

According to a department report, McGoldrick was operating a 1994 Oldsmobile sedan eastbound on snow-covered Gilbert Road in the town of Mooers. He was believed to have lost control of his vehicle after negotiating a slight curve in the roadway. This caused his vehicle to travel into the opposite lane and into the path of a 2008 Chevrolet pick-up truck, being driven westbound by Ralph Graves, 53, Altona.

Graves, along with his two passengers - Sharon Graves, 54, and a 3-year-old child - were transported to CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh by Champlain EMS. The status of the three was not immediately available.

Trooper Jon Dubrey with the Chazy-based state police barracks said no lifesaving measures were attempted by EMS. McGoldrick was pronounced dead at the scene. No passengers were said to be in McGoldrick's vehicle.

Investigator Michael Madore said the cause of the accident is believed to be McGoldrick operating his vehicle at a speed not reasonable for road conditions.

The accident was still under investigation as of Tuesday morning.
