Woman files false report about robbery

PLATTSBURGH - A city woman has been arrested for filing a false report with the Plattsburgh Police Department.

According to a department report, Melissa Vaughan, 27, made a "frantic 911 call" shortly after 8:30 a.m. Jan. 16 claiming she was assaulted and robbed of her purse while on the sidewalk in front of 41 Montcalm Ave. Officers were dispatched to the area to search for the suspect who was described as being a white male, missing two front teeth, wearing a black coat and a blue toque. The man was said to have been running north on Montcalm Avenue.

The report further stated officers scoured the neighborhood looking for the suspect while detectives began investigating the incident. Not long into the investigation, inconsistencies in Vaughan's story surfaced. She ultimately admitted to making the story up as a cover for matters she was to answer for in Clinton County Family Court later that morning.

Vaughan was charged with third-degree falsely reporting an incident and was transported to Family Court. She will be arraigned in Plattsburgh City Court on the charge for filing a false report Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 9 a.m.
