VIC to host snowshoe fest

NEWCOMB - The Newcomb Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) will host its immensely popular Chilly Snowshoe Festival on Saturday, Jan. 17.

The annual event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at their 5922 Rt. 28N facility. Visitors are invited to drop-by at any time during the day to enjoy all, or any portion, of the day's activities.

The Chilly Snowshoe Festival allows visitors the opportunity to explore the VIC's four networked and maintained snowshoe/cross-country ski trails, comprising a total of 3.6 miles.

The ever-popular "Search for the Gold Medallion" event will be held throughout the day, where visitors search for the Medallion along the trail system based on a set of clues. The Gold Medallion scavenger hunt is a favorite activity for visitors all ages and a highlight of the fun-filled day.

Throughout the event the VIC will offer special craft activities to include balsam sachets, snow goggles, snowman pins, and winter art projects. Hot beverages will be provided.

The Newcomb VIC Chilly Snowshoe Festival is part of the region's "Wild Winter Weekend," a two-day event hosted in conjunction with the Paul Smith's College VIC in Saranac Lake.

For anyone that would like to attend but do not own snowshoes - free rentals will be provided courtesy of the Adirondack Mountain Club and the Newcomb VIC. Volunteers will be on-hand to give basic instruction for anyone new to the sport, including winter safety and preparedness tips.

The Adirondack Mountain Club will also present a series of snowshoeing workshops throughout the day. Cross country skiers will be responsible for providing their own equipment.
