Treasurer pleas to stealing cash

MORIAH - The former Moriah Ambulance Squad treasurer accused of stealing from the corps has pleaded guilty.

Rebecca A. Rodriguez, 38, of 17 Wasson St., Witherbee pleaded guilty in Essex County Court Jan. 8 to the felonies of third-degree grand larceny and first-degree falsifying business records. She admitted taking $9,600.

As part of a plea agreement, a charge of second-degree forgery will be dismissed.

Rodriguez could receive a maximum of two and one-third to seven years in state prison. She also faces a fine of up to $19,200. She will be sentenced March 3.

She said she took the money between March and May 2008 for a mortgage-foreclosure action.

Police were initially notified by then-squad captain Neil A. Dupee that discrepancies had been found with the squad's checking account.

A subsequent investigation by State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Moriah Town Police showed that $9,600 was missing from the rescue squad's funds.
