WCS wrestler honored as Warrensburg hosts five teams in Duals Meet

WARRENSBURG - Six teams of wrestlers and hundreds of fans - many of whom drove three hours or more to attend - packed the Warrensburg High School's gymnasium Saturday as the Burghers hosted their annual Duals Meet.

Each team wrestled in five separate meets, and this daylong action put wrestlers' endurance to the test. Warrensburg won two of the matchups and lost three, but earned glory by capturing one of the two individual honors bestowed.

Warrensburg Junior Logan Winter, wrestling at 125 pounds, won the "Most Outstanding Wrestler" award among lightweights.

Winning the crown in the heavyweight category was Alex Meyers of Morrisville-Eaton, who beat the previously undefeated Burgher standout Logan Rock at 175 pounds. Rock beat his other four opponents handily.

Cruising through the 2008-09 season with a 14-2 record, Winter has been wrestling since he was in fourth grade, minus a year's absence last season.

Winter has a reputation for using his flexibility and leverage to his advantage, writhing and squirming his way out of tough holds and accomplishing dramatic reversals.

Coach Mark Trapasso said Monday winter had considerable talent and athleticism.

"He's got a funky style of wrestling and he gets out of very tough situations to score points," he said. "Winter's been a real positive part of our team and he's a good student."

Logan Winter, the son of Tracey and Dana Winter of Warrensburg, enjoys the field of science.

In Saturday's Duals Meet, the Burgher team defeated Massena 49-23, and beat Mohanasen 35-29,but lost 15-58 to Hudson Falls which was champion of the event. The Burghers also lost to Morrisville-Eaton 12-66, and to Beekmantown, 27-54. Morrisville-Eaton was runner-up in the multiple meet, with a 4-1 tally.

In addition to Rock and Winter, offering solid performances for the day were Burghers Donovan Santisteban, Kendall Converse and Colin Campbell - all 3-2 for the day.
