Time to switch gears from the woods to the water

"Hopefully Westport and Willsboro will freeze and start producing some decent catches of smelt," Koop said.

Koop said he'll have minnows available for anglers wishing to take to the hard water this weekend.

Jeff Goldberg, owner of Fish307 in Lake George, said many of the shallow bays on Lake George now hold 2-7 inches of ice.

He said anglers could be seen on Dunham, Harris, Sawmill, Huddle and Basin bays last weekend.

But he warned that warm temperatures could alter the situation in a hurry. For an update, give Goldberg a call at 1-800-FISH307.

For early season ice fishing, Goldberg suggested anglers look into a new arctic suit that, at just 7.5 pounds, not only keeps you warm in sub-zero temperatures but also floats. It can support up to 287 pounds of body weight.

"We're having trouble keeping them in stock," Goldberg said.
