Hopes and plans for the New Year

Forrest Gump told us, "If you don't know where you're going, you'll probably not wind up there." With his admonition in mind here are nine goals for 2009. Although I thought it was going to happen sometime last year, I look forward to a townwide visioning meeting in conjunction with the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program grant we received. Given the state of the national economy, wheels have slowed.

By this summer or fall we look forward to posting on our Web site a series of short, two-minute videos which will promote the town. Later on in the year, when budget time comes again, the goal will be to keep any tax levy increase at or below the cost of living. In 2008 we took the initial steps that needed to be made in our endeavor to invigorate our dormant Industrial Park. A next step will be to apply for a federal grant to direct us in assessing the park's potential.

In town hall we constantly receive positive feedback on our town newsletter, the Town Crier. The success of that publication rests solely with the dedicated work of our volunteer editor, Joyce Ryan. Thanks, Joyce, for your service to our community and we look forward to four more issues in 2009.

Mandated by the Clinton County Health Department, we will add filtration units to the Saranac Water system. We will take preliminary steps addressing the 2010 census. We will calculate the cost of plowing the 27 miles of county roads in the town. We will move toward getting our tax collector, Mark White, on line this year or next.

Perhaps belying Gump's cautionary words, I'm also reminded that if you want to hear God laugh just tell him your plans.

I wish you all a happy and healthy 2009.

Joe Gerardi is the supervisor of the town of Saranac. His column appears regularly in the Clinton County Free Trader Today.
