LARAC awards $72,148 in local grants

GLENS FALLS - Annually, the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council awards grants to organizations, municipalities, and artists from Warren and Washington Counties. Funding for these grants is provided by the New York State Council on the Arts, Warren County, and Rivendell Foundation.

36 nonprofit organizations and municipalities in Warren and Washington Counties will receive $62,148 for arts and cultural programming that is open to the public. Four Individual Artist grants of $2500 each were awarded to area artists to create new work that impacts, reflects, or involves the community.

The New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization program provided $63,148 in funding, with Warren County providing an additional $5000 for organizational projects within Warren County and the Rivendell Foundation provided an additional $4000 toward the Individual Artist awards.

These grants are distributed statewide through the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts. Three separate panels of seven (Washington County, Warren County, and Artist Grants) select the Grant recipients. Funding through LARAC's Arts Initiative program serves to enhance cultural programming within the region while reflecting the qualities and resources unique to the two counties.

These grants have been distributed in Warren County since 1979 and Washington County since the mid-80s. In this twenty plus year history, over $960,000 has been awarded to assist the region's arts and cultural programs. Funding acts as a catalyst for greater availability, exposure, participation, and appreciation of the arts. Without this funding, many of these programs would not have been possible.

The Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council is one of many arts agencies throughout New York State that offers the Decentralization program, funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. Free workshops on the grant process are offered annually in late summer. Applications are due in early fall. Those wishing to apply for these grants or seeking more information about any of the funded programs, should contact Grant Director, Anne Smoczynski, at 798-1144, ext. 4 or anne@larac.org. Details can also be found at www.LARAC.org.
