SARANAC LAKE - Right between the National Football League and the National Basketball Association - that's where one Vermontville native found himself recently.
Nordic combined superstar Bill Demong was featured in the most recent issue of ESPN Magazine, in an article entitled "Jump Start: The U.S. prepares to break its medal drought in nordic combined."
The article focused on the long stretch of futility the U.S. has experienced in Nordic combined skiing, citing a medal drought that has lasted 86 years since the sport was introduced to the winter games. Already this year, Demong and teammate Todd Lodwick have captured seven top-threes in the World Cup series, with Demong himself capturing gold twice.
The ESPN story appeared in the Feb. 23 issue of the bi-weekly publication in a section called "Olympics Insider." The author, Carrie Sheinberg, asked Demong what the team's chances for stepping onto the podium in 2010 were, to which he responded: "If we bring our A-game, we can win a medal."
