Lucky Leprechaun pizza goes to Las Vegas!

OLMSTEDVILLE - They're not high rollers at the casinos, but Scott and Theresa Morrison will be betting their amazing pizzas hit the right numbers in Las Vegas. From March 10-12, the Morrisons - owners of the Lucky Leprechaun Restaurant in downtown Olmstedville - will be competing at the third annual International Pizza Competition at The International Pizza Expo held in the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Three years ago the Morrisons competed in the North East Pizza Show at the Atlantic City Convention Center and walked away with the fourth place prize, having fell short of third place by 3/1000th of a point. Scott said the third place winner then went on to win the big prize in the first annual International Pizza Competition in Vegas. They intend to win it all this year, and have their sights set on the top prize: $10,000.

The pies? They are indeed amazing. The Lucky Lep's Traditional entry has a crust focus, with olive oil, fresh basil, cheddar cheese, and onions folded into the dough. The top will be alive with a dozen different cheeses, pecan-smoked andouille sausage and a fine secret red sauce. The Morrisons non-traditional entry will be the California Cuisine Pizza off the Lucky Lep's menu; it has a white spiced ricotta base with chicken. Saut ed spinach, sundried tomatoes, fresh tomatoes, with a creative cheese blend.

With about two minutes to explain their pizzas to the judges, who make use of detailed scoring sheets, the Morrisons will have to present their pizzas during a very small window of time for judging. If the pie is too hot, it burns the hot palate. If the pie comes to the judges too late, it will be too cold. There's a timing factor involved as well as plenty of skill needed, and, as Scott said, "A little bit of old fashioned Luck of the Lucky Leprechaun goes a long way."
