NORTH CREEK - For the purist, very little can compare to the simple satisfaction that comes from browsing through a local farmer's market.
Whether you are on the hunt for a dozen "farm fresh" eggs, a bunch of carrots, a bouquet for the breakfast table - or any combination of these basic pleasures - a regional farmer's market is the place to go.
Until now, local residents had to travel to distant towns to find farm-fresh products with some making faithful trips to Glens Falls, Schroon Lake, or Keene each week.
But this summer, the newly formed North Creek Farmer's Market will swing into operation on the "Kellogg-Waddell" property along the Hudson River.
The market is anticipated to open in June and will operate every Thursday evening from 4-7 p.m. through early October, weather and participation permitting.
Described as, "a grass roots effort to promote locally grown and produced food, flowers, crafts, and other products," the market will feature local and regional vendors.
Market organizers recently launched a campaign to bring the effort to the public's attention and solicit vendor applications for the season. North Creek Farmer's Market President, Barbara Thomas, is confident that they will attract the necessary vendor participation.
"Travel is the big one for farmers," she said. "we hope to provide a convenient location where they are able to make a fair profit."
Participating vendors will provide their own tables and booths. The market's organizers will support them through advertising, booth space, and local signage.
Several vendors and businesses have already committed to the initiative including Stork Road Farm (cut flowers) and Cafe' Sarah (baked goods).
"We're hoping to have two good size vendors participate and then we will fill in from there," Thomas said.
The market has established bylaws similar to the Glens Falls Farmer Market - one of the largest and most successful market's in the region.
"Our theme is Shop Locally," Thomas concluded.
Potential vendors can find an application form online at www.northcreekfarmersmarket.com or by calling Barbara Thomas at 251-5692.
On Thursday, March 12, at 6:30 p.m., the market will hold an informational meeting at Cafe' Sarah's on Main Street, North Creek. All interested vendors, sponsors, and volunteers are invited to attend.
