Lowe's opens in Ticonderoga

TICONDEROGA - The new Lowe's store in Ticonderoga is open.

The home improvement store welcomed the public Feb. 27 at 7 a.m.

A formal grand opening will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 5. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony as well as a gift card match. Lowe's will match purchases up to $5,000 that day to support Addison County, Vt., Habitat for Humanity's next building project.

The store opening is good news for the community, Ticonderoga Supervisor Bob Dedrick said.

"Lowe's will increase the tax base which will help the town," Dedrick said. "It will also provide sales tax revenue that, not only will benefit the county, but the town itself since some portion of the sales tax will be coming back to the communities.

Lowes also employs many locals, which in these times is a blessing in light of what is happening throughout the country," he added.

The $12 million store is located at 1092 Wicker St. It has 102,000 square feet of space and stocks 32,000 items.

The store expects to employ 120 people, according to Maureen Rich, Lowe's spokeswoman.

When Lowe's formally announced its plans in December 2007 to build a store in Ticonderoga officials said it would be open in late 2008.

But while work started on the Ti site last spring, it has been sporadic while crews completed a new store in Albany. Once the Albany store was finished, work on the local Lowe's commenced in full force.

While it's been common knowledge Lowe's was coming to Ticonderoga for several years - company officials had been before the Ti planning board, the Adirondack Park Agency held a hearing on its proposal in Ti and work had even started on the site adjacent to Wal-Mart on Wicker Street - store officials had refused to confirm their interest in Ticonderoga until December 2007.

With fiscal year 2007 sales of $48.3 billion, Lowe's Companies, Inc. is a Fortune 50 company that serves approximately 14 million customers a week at more than 1,650 home improvement stores in the United States and Canada.

Founded in 1946 and based in Mooresville, N.C., Lowe's is the second-largest home improvement retailer in the world. For more information visit Lowes.com.
