Willsboro grabs Division I title

WILLSBORO - The Warriors solidified their claim to the MVAC Division I title Feb. 11 with a 30-21 win over Westport.

Powered by a 19-point effort from Ashley Sherman, Willsboro scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Eagles in a highly defensive game.

Sherman scored eight of the Warriors' nine first-half points, including a buzzer-beating 24-footer that broke a 6-6 tie.

The Eagles battled back in the third, netting six of their 10 points from the free-throw line to take a one-point lead into the final quarter.

Sherman connected on yet another trey in the fourth, however, and converted 4-of-5 from the line. Meanwhile, Willsboro's defense prevented any easy shots for the Eagles.

Alicia Mahoney and Codia Holland each added five points for Willsboro. Jen Murphy pulled down eight rebounds and Marion James added nine steals. Jade Sayward was agressive on defense with eight rebounds and three steals.

Rebecca White led Westport with seven points while Willa McKinley and Kalika Hopkins added four apeice. The Eagles were held to only six field goals.

Westport head coach Hokie McKinley said his team played solid defense, but just weren't as effective on the offensive end.

"These things happen sometimes in basketball," he said, "you just don't make the shots."

The Eagles defeated Willsboro in a non-league game earlier this season, but were unable to best the Warriors on their home court.

"It was a dogfight," said McKinley. "The next one will be too."

With their victory over Indian Lake/Long Lake on Feb. 17, Division II-leading Westport will meet up with the Warriors a third time on Feb. 20 for the MVAC finals.
