Relay for Life organizers readying for annual event

PLATTSBURGH - Preparations are well under way for this year's Plattsburgh Relay for Life, with several chances for people to show their support for the American Cancer Society.

Organizers of the annual overnight event held a kick-off party at the Senior Citizens of Clinton County senior center Feb. 12, with supporters showing an increased level of interest in what is the 25th anniversary of the local walk.

"The kick-off was phenomenal this year," said Brown. "I was impressed with the turnout and the enthusiasm everyone was bringing."

Though the walk isn't until mid-June, the meeting went over details for the event, including how the walk will be moved from a smaller track at the Clinton County Fairgrounds in Morrisonville to the fairgrounds' main grandstand track. The move was made to accommodate the increase of people participating in the event in recent years, said Brown.

"The relay has just gotten so big and is such a huge event in the Plattsburgh area," said Brown. "We started off behind Stafford Middle School and moved to the fairgrounds to accommodate the size and now we're moving across the fairgrounds to an even bigger track."

"I honestly don't know where we're going next," he added, laughing.

In addition to being a physical activity, the walk will serve as an educational event. Informational literature will be available to those attending the walk, with brochures about the various forms of cancer and steps people can take to limit the risk of contracting cancer.

People will also be able to make a difference this year by participating in CPS-3, said Brown, referring to the third in a series of nationwide cancer prevention studies to better understand the causes of cancer.

Registration for the study will be held at the walk and is open to those ages 30-65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer and who are willing to make a long-term commitment to the study.
