Burghers make their mark in Sectional tourney

WARRENSBURG - The Burgher wrestlers not only tallied individual feats in Saturday's Class D Sectional wrestling tournament, they secured a coveted place for the team by helping it win fourth place among 12 schools, including several state-ranked teams.

With its win, the Burgher wrestling team advanced with the other top three to next weekend's Section II state qualifier meet at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

√"The team and coacher were happy - we wrestled great," Assistant Coach Scott McKenna said Monday. "We were competing against top teams, including Whitehall, which is state-ranked, and Duanesburg, which is a repeat Sectional champion."

Seven Burgher wrestlers, due to their first- through fourth-place finishes, are entered in this tournament, which includes Class C schools as well as the smaller Ds.

In the gritty effort, Logan Rock won the Class D Sectional Championship Saturday in the 215-pound class by defeating Grant Gebo 5-2.

Four Burgher wrestlers were runners-up in their weight classes: Abby Roth, Logan Winter, Cole Tennant, and Colin Campbell.

At 112 pounds, Roth was beaten only by John Diekel of Whitehall, who took the championship. Roth nearly won the crown, however. Late in the match she was ahead in points, but got tied up with Diekel, and she was thrown unexpectedly and pinned, McKenna said.

Burgher Logan Winter at 125 pounds, lost only to his final opponent from Duanesburg, who decisioned him 8-2.

Also losing only one final match was Cole Tennant at 145, who was pinned in 1:25 by David Northshield of Salem.

Colin Campbell, wrestling at 285 but weighing far less, also had a string of victories ended by one final loss. In this last match, he was pinned in 1:05 by a a tough, physical Berne-Knox opponent who had a 33-2 record.

Placing fourth for Warrensburg were Donovan Santisteban at 119 pounds and Jon Vaisey at 96. Santisteban was in a brutal weight class, running up against several state qualifiers.
