PLATTSBURGH - Elmore SPCA of Peru recently received a sizable donation thanks to a fundraising campaign at Garvey Hyundai in Plattsburgh.
During the month of December, the dealership matched donations it received, amounting to $2,500 given to the animal shelter. The money will go directly to the medical expense of caring for and healing all the animals taken in by the shelter.
Carol M. Solari-Ruscoe, secretary of the Elmore SPCA board of directors, said the nonprofit organization was excited to receive the timely financial boost.
"The board of directors, shelter staff, but, most importantly, our wonderful shelter pets cannot thank Garvey Hyundai enough for their genuine commitment to help animals in need," said Solari-Ruscoe. "This incredible act of generosity couldn't have come at a better time since Elmore SPCA faces an immediate and critical financial situation."
Donations such as these are imperative for the shelter to remain open and care for the ever-increasing number of homeless, abandoned and abused animals, she added.
"As a car dealership, we spend a great deal of time and money advertising," said Garvey Hyundai sales manager Nathan Smith. "This December, we decided that we could draw attention to a very noble cause. Most of us here are dog or cat owners and giving some press to a very needy cause seemed just the way to get into the holiday spirit."
Smith said he anticipates holding a similar fundraiser again later this year.
Donations for the Elmore SPCA may be sent to P.O. Box 686, Peru N.Y. 12972, or may be arranged by calling 643-2451 or 534-3484.
