Plans for Earth Week under way

PLATTSBURGH - Individuals and groups within the area are networking to create what they hope to be a week-long event to celebrate Earth Week and a "stronger, more interconnected community."

On Feb. 11, the first meeting to begin organizing the "Local Earth Week Celebration" was held. People with similar interests attended to begin brainstorming ideas of what they would like to see during Earth Week, which is tentatively set for April 17-25 throughout Plattsburgh.

Paul Bardis and Shera Masterson, creators of the Web site www.localsustainability.com, were in attendance. The Web site is to "create a local network of sustainable minded people, organizations and businesses than an organization itself," explained Bardis.

Also, at the meeting were four women - Natalie Ward, Marti Martin, Patricia Fox and Peggy McCartney - who according to Bardis have "a common vision to celebrate and strengthen a caring community and appreciation for taking care of our environment."

Other people at the meeting were members of the Red Hummingbird Society and members of the North Country Co-op, where the meeting was held.

"I was aware of these groups through my search for 'local' while staring the www.localsustainability.com project," Bardis explained. "I knew we ... all shared the same goals and passions for both Earth Week and community."

During the meeting, the group came up with ideas for the celebration including a parade, music, dance and food. Some of the events have been held in the area over the years, but according to Bardis, this will be the first time they all come together.

"The Red Hummingbirds have done the parade and had 40 people participate last year," he said, "and the League of Women Voters sponsor an Earth Day Fair in the mall, but as far as I know, this community has not coordinated all the individual events into a week celebration and have not included all the aspects we hope to see."
