Schumer endorses Congressional candidate Murphy

CLIFTON PARK - U.S. Senator Charles Schumer - who recently used his considerable influence to have Kirsten Gillibrand appointed to the state's other senatorial post - gave a boost Monday to fellow Democrat Scott Murphy of Glens Falls in his quest to be Gillibrand's replacement in her former position representing the 20th Congressional District.

In pledging his endorsement, Schumer praised Murphy for his traditional character and values, and his experience as a venture capitalist.

"I'm impressed by Scott Murphy's fresh approach and knowledge of the issues, and his willingness to work in a bipartisan way," Schumer said. "Considering his real-world experience and a proven track record in building small businesses, he's the 'Man of the Hour' because we need jobs."

Murphy and Schumer held a press conference announcing the endorsement in a pretzel bakery and cafe in a Clifton Park shopette.

The owners, Shannon and Ray Melleady, opened their business two months ago, with a loan from a bank in Ballston Spa. The two twisted pretzels together as they talked politics.

Murphy said small businesses like the pretzel shop were responsible for creating 80 percent of new jobs nationally, and that he'd work tirelessly in the U.S. Senate to help create jobs in upstate New York.

"Our college kids shouldn't have to graduate then look for a job in North Carolina, Alabama or Atlanta - they should be able to find good jobs here in Northern New York," Murphy said. "I'm going to jump in with both feet and create jobs."

Calling the present economic situation a "severe crisis" nationally, Murphy said he'd work alongside Schumer, Gillibrand and President Obama to bring back stability and economic prosperity.

"I'll help work for change in Washington DC that will make a difference to my constituents in upstate New York," he said.
