LEWIS - Residents in Lewis were asked to evacuate their homes for two hours after a truck carrying nearly 10,000 gallons of propane crashed Feb. 17.
According to state police, a mechanical failure caused the truck to turn on its side while traveling on Stowersville Road east of I-87.
The one-vehicle accident closed a section of the road between Moss Road and Jersey Street from 1 p.m. until nearly 1 a.m.
Essex County Emergency Services Director Donald Jaquish said four local fire departments responded to the accident along with county DPW personnel, Sherriff's deputies, state police, and the Elizabethtown-Lewis ambulance squad.
The driver, 54-year-old Steven Dzicek, was transported to Elizabethtown Community Hospital after complaining of neck and shoulder pain. The truck was owned by E. Osterman gas service of Wittensville, MA. No tickets were issued to the driver.
Fireman emptied the propane truck of its 9,800-gallon load, and ordered a half-mile radius of the area evacuated as a precautionary measure before removing the vehicle from the scene.
That radius included several homes that were ordered vacated for the two-hour period.
