Essay contest focuses on respecting differences

PORT HENRY - March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. In honor of this, Mountain Lake Services is sponsoring an essay contest open to all students within Essex County. In an effort to raise awareness, we ask that all essays are focused on the theme of respecting people with disabilities.

The contest is open to all students of Essex County in grades 3 through 12. There will be three grade categories: grade 3-5, grade 6-8, and grade 9-12. We encourage each student to choose their own topic, as long as it pertains to the theme of respecting individuals who are different. The following are examples of ways to participate in this contest: (1) Write an essay about how you show respect to individuals with disabilities, (2) Write an essay about how you would want to be respected if you had a disability, (3) or any other topic pertaining to respecting people's differences. Essays should be no longer than 250 words.

Please return all entries by Feb. 27 to Mountain Lake Services, c/o Dawn McCarthy, 10 St. Patrick's Place, Port Henry, NY 12974; or call Ms. McCarthy with any questions, 546-7151, ext. 44. Awards will be presented to the winners of the contest and these winners will be honored at presentations in late March, 2009
