PLATTSBURGH - An early morning fire has claimed the life of a college student.
Eighteen-year-old Steven Fanning, a State University of New York at Plattsburgh originally from Kings Park, was pronounced dead Sunday morning following a fire at 104 Court St.
According to a Plattsburgh Police Department report, Fanning was unconscious when found inside by firefighters attempting to battle the blaze. He was found with another victim, Matt Ames, 22, Troy, who was visiting the area.
Fanning and Ames were transported to CVPH Medical Center where Fanning was unable to be revived. Ames was last listed in serious condition.
The Court Street dwelling is a three-story wood structure, divided into multiple apartments occupied by several SUNY Plattsburgh students, the report stated. The building suffered significant fire damage to the second floor and severe smoke and water damage to the first and third floors. The approximately 15 residents displaced by the fire were relocated by SUNY Plattsburgh officials.
A joint investigation into the cause and origin of the fire is being conducted by Plattsburgh police, the Plattsburgh City Fire Department, Clinton County District Attorney, and Clinton County and New York State Fire Investigators.
