WARRENSBURG - Vintage snowmobile racing is returning Saturday to Echo

Lake for the second year, and 500 to 600 or more snowmobile

enthusiasts and spectators are expected to attend this first of two

day-long series of races. The second of the race days is set for

March 7.

Saturday's series of races, featuring as many as 100 or more vintage

snowmobiles, is sanctioned by the Northern New York Vintage Snowsled

Association.

Events are headquartered at Echo Lake Lodge, located off Hudson St.,

which will have a variety of food and drinks available.

Spectators can either view the races from the Lodge's deck, or from

the shores of the lake.

Event organizer Dan Galusha of Warrensburg said that a large number

of both competitors and spectators would experience a day full of

racing action.

"The weather looks good for Saturday, and we should have a big

turnout," organizer Dan Galusha said. "We expect an even bigger show

this year -- despite the national economy."

In addition to those who enjoy hard-charging race action, the event

attracts those who appreciate the vintage snowmobiles, primarily from

the 1970s - whether it's inspecting their running gear and engines,

or swapping tales about the early days of the sport.

"Last year, the event included a lot of nostalgia," Galusha said.

"It allows people to see sleds they used to ride or the ones their

father or grandfather used to own."

Local officials hailed the event this week as a well-conducted,

successful attraction that boosts the local economy.

The event has lined up 80 corporate sponsors, primarily in the

construction and transportation industries regionally.

The sponsorship means that cash purses for the races are substantial,

and proceeds can benefit the activities of the wrestling club.

Top cash prizes go to the three premier races, a 340cc Free-Air (air-

cooled) Super-Stock, a 440cc Free-Air Super-Stock, and a Modified/

Combination Class.

Details on the various classes can be found at www.nnyvsr.com.=
