LAKE GEORGE - Warrensburg's senior wrestlers fought tough Saturday, tilting the score in favor of the Burgher team in their 52-30 win over the Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George WarEagles.
The meet provided a final victory for the Burghers, before they - alongside other small-school wrestlers in the region - head into the Section II Class D tournaments, to be held Saturday in Whitehall.
A large crowd of spectators attended the showdown at Lake George High School, which was hosting its first wrestling meet in 27 years. The Warriors discontinued offering the sport in 1982, but re-launched the sport in conjunction with Hadley-Luzerne after a group of beefy, determined Lake George football and soccer players wanted to wrestle for the school and keep in shape and their reflexes sharp during the winter.
Scoring pins for the Burghers were Abby Roth, Donovan Santisteban, Cole Tennant, Travis Acuna, Colin Campbell and Jon Vaisey. Talling pins for the WarEagles were Cecil Hayes, Hunter Hamilton, Lyndon Watkins and Jason Yard.
The seniors wrestling in the middle weight classes turned the tide for the Burghers, coach Mark Trapasso said, noting that the meet could have gone either way had it not been for these key victories.
"Our seniors really came through for us Saturday," he said. "To come up with big wins like that was tremendous - It was a great day for us, and for our seniors."
Noah Davis at 130 pounds won a 12-3 decision over the athletic Justin Cook - to give Warrensburg a lead.
Later in the meet, at 160 pounds Travis Acuna was trailing in points behind WarEagle Tim Goutos, but Acuna headlocked Goutos, scoring a reverse, then put him on his back, ending up with a pin in 3:21.
"These were big turning points in our meet," Trapasso said.
The Burgers finished the 2008-09 season with a 5-9 record.
