Downstreet Cafe Now Open in Bellows Falls

Jenny Strecker and Ana Porteur have just opened the doors to a new restaurant in Bellows Falls, the Downstreet Cafe in the Exner Block on Canal Street, just off The Square.

The women are no strangers to running a restaurant. Strecker owned and operated the Jamaica Coffee House in Jamaica from 1999 to 2006, and Porteur was the chef at Our Place Drop In Center in Bellows Falls and also is a partner with Corey Walker in Guerrilla Grown Produce in Westminster.

The two have been discussing and working on opening the cafe for about a year, and everything fell into place for a December 1 opening.

"I've been looking for a creative job," Strecker said. "I was a tour manager for a band, but when that ended I wanted something that didn't involve a lot of travel."

The menu will include breakfast, soups, sandwiches, a daily hot meal special, lots of baked goods, along with an extensive assortment of coffee, beer and wine.

The cafe will be open everyday except Wednesday, with general hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. except Sunday, when they are open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Strecker said they will have a Grand Opening on Friday, Dec. 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. with entertainment by her father, Bill Strecker, a rhythm and blues musician.

The cafe can be reached at 463-4774.
