ESSEX - The holiday season moves into full swing this weekend as the historic hamlet of Essex hosts its 16th annual Christmas in the Village celebration.
"When the event was started 16 years ago, the goal was to have an old-fashioned Christmas event that involved the entire community," said Donna Lou Sonnet, event coordinator. "It has definitely kept that air about it."
Many fun activities are scheduled for this year's event Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 4-6, including a holiday art exhibit at Adirondack Art Association Gallery where you can meet the artists. Village shops, including some that had closed for the season, will be open all three days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a great variety of hand-made art and crafts.
"The businesses and organizations that do get involved with it always have refreshments and they put a lot of effort into decoration," said Sonnet. "The make a point to see that everyone who visits is comfortable and has a chance to explore al the different venues."
On Saturday, Dec. 5, welcome Santa and Mrs. Claus as they disembark the Essex ferry at 9:30 a.m. and proceed to the Essex firehouse to enjoy a home-cooked breakfast with all of the children and parents. Also on Saturday is the Essex Community Church Bazaar and Luncheon.
Steven Kellogg, the author of several children's books and a regular favorite at Christmas in the Village, will be on hand Saturday afternoon at Beldon Noble Library to sign his books.
