Schroon looks to remain competitive

SCHROON LAKE - The Schroon Lake girls basketball team has been a power the past few seasons.

The Wildcats won section championships in 2007 and 2008 before posting a 16-4 record last winter.

What about 2009-10?

Schroon returns six players, but will be hard-pressed to replace a pair of key graduates. Ashley Whitty, who averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds a game, is gone along with Emily Whitney, who led the club in assists and steals.

But more than statistics, the three-year starters provided the team with leadership and stability, Coach Lee Silvernail said.

"It's time for new players to step up," Silvernail said.

Returning to the Wildcat roster are Rebecca Armstrong, Ashley Subra and Lynne Marie Veverka at forward along with Jocelyn Bowen, Mindy Whitty and Korinne Talham at guard.

New to the club are forwards Denae Armstrong and Chelsie Anslow and guard Liz Bessey.

"We'll be a very quick and athletic team," Silvernail said. "We'll get after the ball on defense; everyone can score and must be accounted for."

The coach is counting on his veterans to lead the way, but has been impressed with his rookies - particularly Bessey.

"She's quick, scrappy, aggressive," Silvernail said.
