PORT HENRY - Moriah will field a young, inexperienced girls basketball team this season.
The Vikings return just one starter and three others from 2008-09, when they posted a 6-10 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference record and 6-13 overall mark.
The one returning starter, Sam Slattery, led Moriah in scoring at 6.5 points game and assists with 44 last winter. She was second on the team in steals with 36.
Coach Steve Pelkey said Slattery will be asked to do a lot, even moving from her normal guard position to forward at times.
The Vikings are also counting heavily on the other returning players - Jarrah Jerdo, Chynna Allen and Dana Aurilio.
"They need to be our leaders on and off the court," Pelkey said.
Slattery and Jerdo will man the back court along with rookies Chelsea MacDougal, Santana Martinez, Jamie Poirier, Lauren Pelkey and Harley Chapuk.
Allen and Aurilio will be joined in the front court by newcomers Hayley Waldron, Catherine Hickok, Brooke Sheffer and Brittany Orr.
"We're a very young ball club," Coach Pelkey said. "With two juniors, five sophomores and a freshman, all first-year varsity basketball players, we'll experience some growing pains."
While young, the Vikings do have talent, the coach said.
"Waldron has impressed me through the first few practices as well as some of the other younger players," Pelkey said.
Assisting Pelkey on the bench this season are Mark Davenport and Megan Gilbo.
