Lady Sentinels look to repeat

TICONDEROGA - Ticonderoga looks to repeat its girls basketball success of a year ago in 2009-10.

The Sentinels return six seniors from a club that won the Section VII Class C championship last season.

It won't be easy, though.

"The team is looking to build on the success of last year," Coach Shelly Young said. "We did lose Julie Thompson, Carly Tubbs and Alex Smith to graduation. Tubbs is presently playing for Hartwick."

Thompson led the team in scoring and returning last season, while Tubbs and Smith proved to be solid contributors.

Returning seniors are Sam Diehl, Chelsea Budwick, Jocelyn Barber, Jamie Patchett, Meg Vradenburg and Taylor Denno.

New to the Sentinels roster are Jenell Coffin, Kate Mercer, Sarah teRiele, Kaylene Ross, Calsie Granger, Jessica Blodgett and Autumn Olcott.

"I look for Jocelyn Barber, Meg Vradenburg and newcomer Sarah teRiele to take over in the post position vacated by Thompson," Young said. "I also feel we have a strong contingent of guards led by Sam Diehl and Chelsea Budwick.

"I feel this season we are a strong team with a deep bench," Young added. "This team has been working hard since the first day of practice and all 13 players will have an important role in the overall success of the team."

Young, entering her third season at the helm, also enjoyed a big season in 2009-10. Young was named Section VII Class C Girls Coach of the Year by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.

A 1984 Ti High Graduate, Young was a three-sport stalwart for the Sentinels before going on to St. John Fisher College, where she played basketball.

Young is not the first Ti High coach to be honored by the BCANY.

Bud Bressett won the honor in 1986, Bob Dedrick in 1992, Mike Graney in 2002 and Dan Dorsett in 2008 for their work with the Sentinels' boys team. Rick Smith won it in 2002 for coaching the Ti girls.

Young is assisted by Joe Defayette.
