Arson suspected in Mintzer Bros. fire

On April 18, at approximately 6:55 p.m., the Rutland City Fire Department responded to the abandoned Mintzer Brothers lumber building located at Baxter and West street s for a structure fire.

Fire Chief Schlachter said that, upon arrival, the south end of the building was engulfed in fire. Professional fire suppression efforts kept the fire from spreading to an attached auto body business and nearby storage buildings.

The Vermont State Police was contacted to request assistance with conducting an origin and cause investigation. Fire Investigators from the Division of Fire Safety and the Vermont State Police responded to the scene to work with the City Fire Department.

The investigation showed there was no power to the building and no other reason other than direct human involvement could have caused the fire.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Vermont Arson Tip Award Program at 1-800-32 ARSON or the Vermont State Police at 773-9101.

The south end of the building was a total loss. Estimated value is $100,000. No one was injured during the fire.
