CHAMPLAIN - The community will soon head out onto the links to honor a former Northeastern Clinton Central School student.
Matthew Fredette, coach of the school's varsity golf team, is helping to organize the Jonathan McGoldrick Memorial Golf Tournament, an event to be held Saturday, June 13, at the North Country Golf Club. The tournament is dedicated to the life of Jonathan C. McGoldrick, a member of the school's junior class who lost his life in a car accident Jan. 19. The focus of the event is to both remember McGoldrick and to raise money for a scholarship fund established in his name, said Fredette.
"The team has been thinking of different ways to honor Jon's memory, and one of them was to hold a tournament," said Fredette, who added the team is also dedicating their golf season to McGoldrick's memory. "[The tournament] makes sense because it's the perfect way to raise money for other students in his name."
McGoldrick was known for being an avid golfer, said Fredette, and was a member of the school team for three seasons.
"I think this is a really good way to honor Jon," he said.
Though the tournament is more than a month away, Fredette said he wanted to get the word out early to encourage the community to participate by either registering to participate or helping underwrite the event. The cost to sponsor a hole is $50, which is an easy way a few people can get together to show their support if they don't want to spend the afternoon on the course, he said.
"We're hoping that's another way people will get involved," said Fredette. "I'm hoping that most people, especially within the Northeastern district, will want to participate in some way. Every cent that's made is going to help kids."
