"Perhaps a private provider can step forward and meet the VA's new rules," Boula said. "We (ECH) would hate to lose the clinic, but at least it would be somewhere in Essex County."
Several Moriah residents at the meeting expressed concern and praised ECH officials for attempting to save the VA clinic.
"This could create a tremendous hardship for all the vets who use that clinic," said Scozzafava, noting Elizabethtown Community Hospital is not to blame for the situation.
The VA clinic at Elizabethtown Community Hospital provides primary care services for veterans in Essex County and the surrounding areas. It also offers behavioral health care, lab work, a prescription service and a smoking cessation program.
Specialty services are available through the VA Healthcare Network Upstate New York at Albany.
