Town of Plattsburgh celebrates Turnoff Week

PLATTSBURGH - Looking to get your child away from the television, or away from the video games? The town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department may be able to help.

The Center for Screen-Time Awareness (CSTA) is celebrating Turnoff Week, which focuses on getting children out of the house to enjoy more activities, during April 20-26. On April 24 and 25, the town of Plattsburgh is promoting two free events for children to enjoy while they're away from their electronics.

On Friday, April 24, the city of Plattsburgh Recreation Gym at the US Oval will be the site of "Family Bounce Night," from 6-8 p.m. This event is open to children up to age 13 throughout Clinton County.

"We actually participated last year [in Turnoff Week]. However we decided to do kind of smaller programs on a smaller level," explained Janet Sosnicki, recreation program coordinator for the town of Plattsburgh. "I thought this year it would be nice to get all the organizations together and really promote this Turnoff Week."

Sosnicki added she believes it's a very positive thing for kids and the recreation department is looking to promote more positive activities.

"It is a very positive thing for kids, to get the kids away from all electronics and out there, being active, doing something positive with their families," she said. "That's really the main reason why we decided to do that, just to promote some positive activities getting them out and active with each other and their families."

During the Family Bounce Night, the town of Plattsburgh teamed up with Eat Well Play Hard, a childhood obesity prevention initiative of the New York State Department of Health. Through EWPH, Sosnicki was connected to many other organizations looking to help their goal.

The evening will be co-sponsored by the town of Schuyler Falls, American Heart Association, DARE, Army National Guard, Peru School, Clinton County Youth Bureau, Fidelis Care, City of Plattsburgh and Champlain Valley Family Center. Some of the organizations will also have booths set up at the event.
