TICONDEROGA - Ticonderoga enters the 2009 baseball season with an eye on continued success.
The Sentinels have won the last four Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Division II and Section VII Class C championships.
A year ago Ti was 15-1 in CVAC play and 16-4 overall.
"As always, we have high expectations," Coach Dan Dorsett said. "This year will be tough, though, after losing both of our top two pitchers. We must focus on playing great defense and develop a pitching squad that can compete at a high level or we will not be able to repeat."
Gone are mound aces Hunter Denno and Matt Streeter. Denno posted a 5-0 record with a 1.90 earned run average last spring.
The cupboard isn't bare for Ti, however. There are eight players returning, including team leaders Todd Carr and Jake Taylor along with CVAC all star Anthony Barnao.
Carr, a catcher, paced the Sentinels with 22 runs batted in in 2008.
Taylor, an infielder, led the team in runs with 23.
Barnao, an infielder and pitcher, topped the Sentinels with a .500 batting average.
Tyler Bush and Robert Kearns return to join Taylor and Barnao on the infield along with rookie Robert teRiele.
Steven Lenhart, Alex Swartz and Kaleb Bruce return to roam the Ti outfield with newcomers Nate Laundree, Bryant Austin and Miles Genier.
The pitching staff will include veteran Alex Yaw, Bush, Barnao, teRiele and Laundree.
"Our work ethic and approach is vital," Dorsett said. "We can not take any situation or game for granted if we want to remain playing at a high level."
Assisting Dorsett on the bench this season are Rick McClintock, Nate Yaw and Scott Nephew.
