Mountaineers poised to rebound

MINERVA - They are a year older - and with that comes even more experience. The 2009 Minerva\Newcomb Mountaineers baseball team is a legitimate defensive force. Featuring the pitching one-two punch of senior Sam Kelly and junior Brandon Poulton and seven seniors, the Mountaineers are poised to be this year's Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Cinderella.

"We have a strong returning crew of players and a deep pitching staff," Coach Ed La Course. "If we hit this year, we will be in great shape."

Offensive power will be supplied by first baseman Kevin Yandon, freshman up-start Dylan Saville and brothers Devin and Branden Tokarz.

But in his 11th season, La Course knows that baseball is all about the variables.

"Morgan Winslow and Jesse Montanye may make the difference if they come through," he said. "The hitting will be well balanced with no easy outs in the line up."

This year, an improvement over a 4-6 record wouldn't be a surprise.

"We look to improve and be successful in sectional play," La Course said.
