CHESTERTOWN - This year's edition of the North Warren Varsity Baseball team has high hopes to continue the Warrior tradition of hard-hitting, competitive baseball.
They'll need to work hard and play smart to achieve their goals, according to coach Jason Humiston.
Last year's squad tallied substantial accomplishments, garnering a 14-6 record and reaching the Section II finals for the first time in over 30 years.
Players will have to step up to fill the shoes of 2008 stars Aaron Griffen, Standout pitcher Eric Konazewski, Ryan Wade, and Bruce Carpenter and other graduates, Humiston said. Key returning players, the coach said, are John Remington and Lou Galarza.
At North Warren, where baseball is a passion, teams are known for their expertise with the bat, and this year is no different, Humiston said.
"Our goal for the season is compete well each game and grind out some wins," he said. "Our team is very young and it will be important for us to get off to a good start."
Humiston's team did just that April 9 in the Cougars' season opener. They beat Fort Edward 7-3, relying on John Remington's remarkable pitching and batting performance. Remington struck out 10, plus he bagged three hits for his three times at bat. Travis Monroe helped with his 3-4 tally with two doubles.
The team is seeking to get back to the Sectional finals, which will take some development of the pitching staff, Humiston said.
"It should be a fun season and we will be ready," he said.
