Classic cars to invade fairgrounds May 23-24

MORRISONVILLE - The sound of revving engines, the smell of vintage upholstery and the sight of some of the most sleek designs in automotive history will soon fill Clinton County Fairgrounds.

The Champlain Valley Classic Cruisers will host the 11th annual Champlain Valley Spring Nationals Saturday, May 23, and Sunday, May 24. Though the show is about a month away, organizers are getting the word out early to generate buzz about the event and the charitable causes it will benefit. Once again, the event will help the Clinton County Veterans Assistance Program, Hospice of the North Country and local DARE programs.

"We always make a generous donation to these charities each and every year," said Kevin Agnew, club vice president.

This year, the nonprofit organization will also help raise money for Life Flight Medical Rescue, Agnew added.

The show presents awards for 41 classes, which even includes new cars and motorcycles, Agnew said. In addition to their trophies, Best of Show winners will also receive jackets, which is another new feature this year. One of the Best of Show winners will also be chosen to go to the Super Wheels Showdown in Boston, Mass., Oct. 3.

On May 23, the car show will open with registration at 8 a.m., which will be open until noon. The "Nifty Fifty" and Top 10 awards will be presented at 3 p.m. A 50-50 drawing will also be held at 3 p.m. The show will continue later in the afternoon with a "cruise-in" where participants may show off their classic cars at A & W Restaurant on State Route 9, just north of the city of Plattsburgh. The night will include live music by The Bootleg Band from 6:30-9:30 p.m., and a presentation of some awards that night.

On May 24, the show will again open with registration from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Muffler Rap will be held at 12:30 p.m. and class awards will be presented at 3 p.m. The day will also include drawings for two raffles. One raffle will be for a 42-inch LCD HD television, with tickets $1 each or six for $5. The other raffle will be for a Chevy 383 Stroker engine, with tickets for that raffle $2 each or three for $5.
