Ambulance squad to start billing

ELIZABETHTOWN - Elizabethtown-Lewis Emergency Squad is taking steps to ensure its survival.

Each year members of the community spend countless hours maintaining a volunteer ambulance service and respond to over 300 calls each year. While there has been an increase in the number of requests for ambulance service, income has remained level for the past few years.

In an effort to provide adequate funding to meet ever increasing costs, Elizabethtown-Lewis Emergency Squad will start billing. By billing each patient's insurance company, Elizabethtown-Lewis Emergency Squad expects to obtain insurance reimbursement that is available for ambulance transportation.

Elizabethtown-Lewis Emergency Squad will continue to provide service to all patients regardless of the ability to pay. The first priority of Elizabethtown-Lewis Emergency Squad is to respond when needed. As a non profit organization, its purpose is to provide emergency medical care and treatment to residents in the Elizabethtown-Lewis area.

Elizabethtown-Lewis Emergency Squad has contracted with MultiMed Billing Service, Inc. of Baldwinsville, New York to operate the billing program. MultiMed is a full service billing company experienced in answering patient questions, submitting insurance claims and providing assistance with the billing process. MultiMed will submit all bills to the appropriate insurance company on behalf of the patient and will assist with any insurance issues. Ambulance bills are generally covered by insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid.

Elizabethtown-Lewis Emergency Squad's new billing program will begin on April 1, 2009. Income obtained by billing will provide an additional means of funding supplies, equipment, training, staffing and maintenance so as to provide the best possible emergency medical service to area residents.

Openings for new members interested in joining Elizabethtown-Lewis Emergency Squad are available. Residents interested in volunteering their time to serve the community they live in can write for an application.
