Exhibit celebrates Slate Valley machinery

The Slate Valley Museum's recent exhibit, "Heavy Lifting: A Human and Technological History of Moving Slate from Quarry to Market,1850-Present", has received an Upstate New York History Alliance (UHA) Award of Merit in the category Interpreting Our Past.

The award was presented to the museum staff in Granville, N.Y., last week at the Annual Conference of the UHA and the Museum Association of New York in Tarrytown, N.Y. The exhibit, which opened in June 2008, is ongoing.

With funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services Museums for America Program, the Slate Valley Museum staff created, over a three-year period, the award-winning exhibit of slate quarrying machinery and an accompanying multi-media interpretive presentation that incorporates the real voices of quarrymen, historic sound recordings, historic and modern videos and photographs, and archival materials from the museum's collection.

The museum, which is handicapped accessible, is open year-round Tuesday through Friday, 1-5 p.m., and Saturdays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Call the museum at 518-642-1417 or visit the museum website at www.slatevalleymuseum.org.
