Athlete sets new marathon record on two wheels

SCHROON LAKE An athlete who doesnt run stole the show at the annual Adirondack Marathon Sept. 21. Bill Schwarz, a disabled athlete from Kinderhook, won the handcycle race with a record time. He covered the 26.2 miles around Schroon Lake in 1 hour, 45 minutes, 31 seconds to win and smash the old course mark of 1:46:50 set by Chris Klebl in 2003. Jeremy Shortsleeve of South Burlington also broke the old course record with a time of 1:45:53, but had to settle for second place. David Herr of Canaan, Vt., successfully defended his marathon championship, winning in 2:38:13 He also won a year ago. Virginie Poritzky of Greenfield won the womens marathon in 3:15:45. She won the race in 1998 and 2005. In the two-person marathon relay, the team led by John Ehntholt of Glens Falls won in 2:43:05. Nick Menzies of Boston claimed the half marathon, covering the 13.1 miles in 1:18:36. Dino Montagna of Erie, Pa., was second in 1:22:35. Karen Waterbury of Plattsburgh was the top woman in the half marathon in 1:32:10. She was followed by Anne Hessberg of Slingerlands in 1:32:14. There were 425 finishers in the half marathon and 212 in the marathon. Adirondack Distance Festival started Saturday with the 10th annual Helpers Fund 5K and 10K races in Chestertown. Andre Wade of Chestertown won the mens division of the 6.2-mile race in 41:40. Christine Tokarz from Pottsboro, Texas, won the womens race in 46:37. In the 5K, Dan Dominie of Canton finished first in 18:14. Elizabeth Harrison of Jay, was the first female finisher in 21:20. More than 150 runners competed.
