Teen indicted, jailed over crash that killed friend

WARRENSBURG A local teenager who police say was driving drunk and rolled her car in a crash that claimed the life of her friend was indicted on a variety of felony charges last week. Cortney C. LaCarte, 19, of 19 Milton Ave. was charged with two counts of Aggravated Vehicular Homicide, one count of first-degree Aggravated Vehicular Manslaughter, one count of Aggravated Vehicular Assault and two counts of first-degree Vehicular Assault in an Aug. 3 incident that claimed the life of Nancy Commarto, 20, of Lake George. LaCartes lawyer plead Not Guilty on LaCartes behalf in an arraignment held Sept. 9 in front of Warren County Judge John Hall. LaCarte was taken to Warren County jail for lack of $5,000 cash bail, and Hall adjourned the case until Oct. 31. At the time of the crash, LaCartes blood alcohol level was determined by police to be 0.20 percent, and she later told police she had smoked a considerable amount of marijuana earlier that day. Michael Ehle, 21, was seriously injured in the crash. Police say LaCarte was speeding through a curve on state Rte. 9 between Warrensburg and Lake George when she lost control of her 2008 Honda Civic just below the twin bridges, or Northway overpass. They determined LaCartes sedan skidded off the highway and overturned as it struck a rock ledge south of the Finkle Rd. intersection. LaCarte was also indicted on misdemeanor counts of DWI, Aggravated DWI, DWI-drugs, and reckless driving. The arrest was made by Investigator Edward Affinito of the Warren County Criminal Investigations Unit.
