Ski Bowl Park grant finalized

NORTH CREEK After months of frustrating delays and a lack of state-level cooperation, the Johnsburg Town Board has finally received signed grant contracts from the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation. If approved by the town, the effort to improve the Ski Bowl Park area could start as early as this fall with the resurfacing of the towns tennis courts. This is exciting news for us, Supervisor Goodspeed commented during a recent board meeting. Thanks to Betty Little it looks like we can move forward over there. Goodspeeds reference to Senator Little stems from her efforts to move the ball forward within the Office of Parks and Recreation, since the contracts had stalled earlier this year following a key employees retirement. The contract is in hand so hopefully we can get started with work up there this fall, Goodspeed added. The grant application was the result of numerous efforts by local groups to identify the scope of work needed in the park, including how to develop the park into a dynamic outdoor attraction for area youth. The grant implementation committee, led by Joel Beaudin of North River, focuses on several short and long term projects. Immediate needs include tennis court repairs and updates to playground equipment. Long term projects include a redesign of the access road, a skating park, and the installation of new beach-side equipment and facilities. While the grant contract gives the town good cause to celebrate, the issue of the towns swimming area and broken dam continue to hamper long-range planning efforts. Goodspeed pointed out that with the dams failure last winter, and its impact on the swimming area, it could force the town to reconsider portions of the plan, or at least delay them until the problem is solved. The town is continuing to work with the Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Warren County Soil and Water Department, to negotiate a resolution.
