AVCS falls to Tupper Lake in season opener

TUPPER LAKE AuSable Valley struggled to find its groove as the Tupper Lake Lumberjacks rolled to an easy 30-7 victory in their season-opening Northern Athletic Conference football game Sept. 5. The Lumberjacks relied heavily on an effective rushing attack from Ian Smetanick and Jordan Nason, who together combined for 148 yards and three touchdowns. Smetanick scored early in the first quarter on a 16-yard run and then a second time in the third quarter to cap a long drive. Plagued by mishandles, the Patriots fumbled five snaps, including one that was recovered by the Lumberjacks, leading to a late first-quarter score by Nason. Tupper Lake's Evan Dechene pulled down one of two Lumberjack interceptions, running it back 35 yards for a touchdown to start the second half. AuSable Valley redeemed itself somewhat in the fourth quarter when running back Ben Prentiss broke loose for a 73-yard touchdown. Kicker Nick Rock added the extra point. 1 2 3 4 T Ausable Valley 0 0 0 7 7 Tupper Lake 14 0 16 0 30
