I-89 accident reroutes traffic

COLCHESTER On Sept. 3, at approximately 5:51 a.m., a Pike Industries vehicle struck a major utility line while working on Interstate 89 Southbound at Exit 16. Thedowned utility lineresulted in closure of all north and southbound laneson Interstate 89, to include the Exit 16 off ramp southbound. During this incident, Vermont State Police also responded to a three vehicle crash involving a Pike Industries Highway Sweeper and two motor vehicles at the same location. There were no injuries resulting from this crash. Vermont State Police, Department of Motor Vehicle's Enforcement, Chittenden County Sheriff's Department, Colchester Police, and Winooski Police agencies assisted with blocking intersections and rerouting traffic.Interstate 89 was closed to southbound traffic between Exit 17 and 16 for approximately 3 hours whileutility personnel repairedthe utility line. The shut down resulted in a severe traffic tieup on Interstate 89 and adjoining roadways, Route 2, U.S. Route 7 and other secondary arteries.
