VERGENNES The Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant totaling over $900,000 for a three-year period was awarded to Addison Northwest Supervisory Union (ANWSU) School District by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) that started July 1. PEP Grant Project is entitled Eat Right, Get Fit, Be Smart to emphasize the focus areas of nutrition, fitness, and the relationship to academic achievement. This grant is based on Harvard psychiatrist John Ratey's research about the close connection between increased learning and aerobic exercise. As reported in Rateys book SPARK: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, exercise helps the cardiovascular system its most significant impact is improving student brain function. Ratey also reports that the implementation of New P.E. methods in Titusville, Pa., has not only improved students academic standardized test scores; it has also eliminated the incidence of fist fights and obesity among junior high students.
