Fort TI to host "loser" general

TICONDEROGA : British Gen. John Burgoyne will return to Fort Ticonderoga on Friday, Sept. 26, as portrayed by British actor Howard Burnham. The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Fort Ticonderogas Deborah Clarke Mars Education Center. Howard Burnhams Thirty Wagons and a Wine Cellar: Johnny Burgoynes American Misadventure, his amusing and informed characterization of General Burgoyne, was originally created for the 225th anniversary of the Saratoga Campaign in 2002. With humor and resignation, the general recounts his colorful life and his role in the American War of Independence as the man who lost America. Fort Ticonderoga has become an annual venue for Burnhams characterizations. For the past four years, he has performed for audiences at the forts annual Seminar on the American Revolution. This is the first time one of Burnhams portrayals at Fort Ticonderoga is open to the general public. Born in Bournemouth, England, Burnham was educated at Clayesmore School, Dorset, and at University College in the University of Durham, where he took honors in modern history. He has worked as an actor, educator, and museum curator. In 1973, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London. He began performing his dramatic monologues in 1981his one-man shows have featured Lewis Carroll, Charles Dickens and William Shakespearse. Burnham has lived in Columbia, S.C., since 1998. Tickets for Burnhams performance are available at the door at $10 for the general public and $8 for members of the Friends of Fort Ticonderoga.
