Rotary to host ninth annual "Roducky Derby" next Saturday

PLATTSBURGH One of the areas most anticipated races of the year will return to downtown Plattsburgh next weekend the annual Roducky Derby. The Plattsburgh Rotary Club is selling hundreds of rubber ducks that will compete for first place in the Saturday, Sept. 13 event, now in its ninth year. Roducky Derby chairperson Robert Grugle said the members of the Plattsburgh Rotary Club work hard to make the derby an exciting event because proceeds from the derby benefit various charitable organizations in the local community. Many members of the Rotary Club take time out of their busy schedules to help raise funds through this event to continue the work many non-profit organizations do each and every day in the North Country, stated Grugle. We help the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, the Clinton County Christmas Bureau, the Battle of Plattsburgh, said committee member Vicki Marking. Many people would probably be surprised how many different things we're actually supporting. The Roducky Derby will be held during the Battle of Plattsburgh festivities and start immediately following the Beat Retreat at approximately 4 p.m. The race will begin behind Macdonough Monument on the banks of the Saranac River. Individual roduckies may be adopted for a $5 donation. Ducks may also be purchased five for $20, 14 for $50, 30 for $100 and 75 for $250. Participants need not be present to win. This years grand prize is four tickets to the Late Night with Conan OBrien show in New York City, with transportation and lodging provided by WPTZ NewsChannel 5. In addition to the trip, other race prizes include a one-night stay for two at the Mirror Lake Inn in Lake Placid; four non-holiday adult life passes for the 2008-09 Winter Season at Whiteface Mountain; an orange sapphire pendant from Kneucraft Fine Jewelry; six mid-week greens fee passes from Bluff Point Resort; Serengeti sunglasses from First View Eye Care; Best Western & the Ground Round Grill and Bar gift cards; a gift membership from AAA Northway; two $100 certificates for U.S. savings bonds; a three-month gift membership to the Plattsburgh YMCA; gift baskets and a ladies shoulder bag. Businesses may also adopt ducks for $25 each. While businesses are not eligible for individual prizes, the winning business will have its name engraved and displayed for one year on the Roducky Cup. Roducky entry forms are available at Champlain Centre, Champlain National Bank Office, Charter Communications, Northern Insuring, Meadowbrook Healthcare, Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce, Press Republican, the office of CPA Don Moore, and local TD BankNorth branches.
