PLATTSBURGH As a new generation of older adults looks to redefine retirement, there is a growing focus on wellness, work and volunteerism. When it comes to finding tools for staying healthy and involved or information about benefits, senior center are the place to start. This September, the Senior Citizens Council of Clinton County invites the community to learn more about its programs and services during National Senior Center Month. Join them for Tai Chi, exercise activities, mingling, entertainment, day trips, health clinics, public hearings and more, as they celebrate Seniors Centers Work!, the theme of this years celebration. A host of activities have been planned including a day trip to the Akwesasne Casino Wednesday, Sept. 17. Seniors will be instructed in ballroom dancing Monday, Sept. 29. The center will also hold chair exercise activities for everyone to participate. Todays senior centers are evolving to reflect a new view of aging that empowers the people they serve, said James Firman, president and chief executive officer of the National Council of Aging. Theyre connecting older adults with meaningful career and volunteer opportunities, and increasing their access to valuable benefits and resources. The Senior Citizens Council provides benefits counseling, congregate meals, volunteer placement, health screenings, etc. The center also offers innovative activities and programming such as computer classes, wellness workshops, foreign language lessons and shuffleboard. The people coming into our center have deep ties to the community and are excited about sharing their diverse skills and talents, said Amy Besaw, Senior Citizens Council program coordinator. Our goal is to provide the tools, resources and opportunities to help them manage their health and finances and find new ways to contribute.
