NAPP offers free emergency contraception every Monday

PLATTSBURGH Northern Adirondack Planned Parenthood will offer free emergency contraception every Monday at all NAPP health centers beginning on Sept. 8. Women and men over the age of 18 with a valid photo ID will receive a pack of EC that day. Women under 18, or without identification, must be seen by a nurse before receiving a prescription for EC. If a nurse is not available, patients will receive a certificate for EC which can be used at a later date. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that women who had EC at home had fewer unintended pregnancies than those who had to obtain it from a doctor. EC can prevent unintended pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex and the sooner it is taken, the better it works. A one-time grant award from the New York State Department of Health allows NAPP to get EC into the hands of our patients before they need it. Over the course of 2008, NAPP will distribute more than 2,300 doses of EC to all new patients and at annual exams and through Free EC Mondays.
